Are landlords required to give rent receipts?
Several states require a receipt for cash payments (for example California, New York, Massachusetts and Maryland), and some require one on request for any payment. Even where it isn't required, a receipt is your best record of what was paid and when, and it heads off disputes at move-out or in court. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a receipt if the tenant pays electronically?+
Bank transfers and payment apps leave their own record, so a receipt is usually optional. Many landlords still send one because it confirms which month the payment covered.
Should I number my rent receipts?+
Yes. Sequential numbers make it easy to match receipts to your rent ledger and spot gaps.
